happy birthday to alberta playwrights’ network
In September of 1985, a group of ad-hoc Alberta playwrights (Stephen Heatley, Conni Massing, Lyle Victor Albert, and Raymond Storey), with funding from Alberta Culture founded the Alberta Playwrights’ Network. The original goal was to assist the burgeoning voices of writers from across the province and to create a network of support and assistance. 40 years later, we are still going strong!
Alberta Playwrights’ Network strives to be a resource for playwrights at any stage of their career or development. We have assisted everyone from the beginner writing their first play to the seasoned produced playwright working on their next hit. With our modest budget and small staff we have had a hand in developing well over 3000 plays and assisting countless theatre creators in their artistic journey. We truly believe that “every story deserves an audience, and every voice deserves to be heard,” and we work everyday to make sure that the incredible pool of Alberta writers have a place to be supported and showcased.
In celebration of APN’s forty years of service to the playwriting community we are hosting two celebration events in September, (one in Calgary and one in Edmonton), featuring play readings from award winning Alberta playwrights, stories, live music, and cake!
There have been many changes to the theatrical landscape in the in the past 40 years, but APN has always been the touchstone organization for anyone interested in pursuing the art and craft for writing for the stage. Join us for an evening celebrating top-notch local writers and creators, including Eugene Stickland and others in Calgary and David Van Belle and Collin Doyle in Edmonton on Sep. 27, 2025.
